Upcoming at The Garden Center ... Dance Connect Company Class Series Since taking up residence at 56 Arbor Street, it has been our intention to share the space, dialogue, and a sense of exploration with the larger dance community in Hartford. Tomorrow morning, Chloe Carlson will begin a 3 class series of open classes for her company Dance Connect, and for interested dancers with at least 3 years of modern/contemporary dance training. Phrase work will reflect her current movement influences and her ongoing interest in Limon Technique. The material will also be filtered though one key question as she prepares for her rehearsal: How do we cultivate a more present engagement in the technique class and effectively transfer that practice into performance? Drop-ins are welcome, $15/class
Talking Dance We invite you to join us twice a month for Talking Dance, a forum facilitated by Leslie Frye Maietta. Fresh from her first summer of graduate study, Leslie is eager to share material from her theory, history and research studies as a basis for group discussion. Talking Dance will be open to local dance artists, educators and enthusiasts as a way to connect, mobilize and enliven conversation surrounding dance. How can we move beyond complacency in our teaching? How can we examine race, gender and class in relation to our dance community? Where and how can we push the boundaries of knowledge and art making and what impact does that have on the people around us? How will others resist or push back in the challenging of their ideas and beliefs? Articles and readings will be emailed and a book list is provided below. This, however, if not a class. All are welcome, to join the discussion even if you haven't had the chance to read all the materials. The Black Dancing Body, by Brenda Dixon Gottschild To confirm your participation and to receive supplemental reading materials, email leslie.frye@hotmail.com.
Works in Progress Showings
Monthly Works in Progress Showings are intended to provide an opportunity for area dance makers to share works in progress, engage in meaningful discussion and receive constructive feedback in a safe and supportive environment. Interested participants are invited to share a complete work (no longer than 15 minutes), a movement phrase, or musings about a newly conceived idea. Each work in progress will be followed by facilitated non-directorial feedback from those in attendance. The evening is also open to those who are simply interested in nurturing the creative work being incubated in our city. If you are interested in sharing work in October, please register in advance via
(re)Birth Salon Salon: a lively coming together of people from varied segments of the community, gathered under one roof by an inspired host, to share art, ideas, and conversation. After a year in development as part of the Artist in Residnece program at Billings Forge, (re)Birth premiered at Charter Oak Cultural Center this past spring. Now we are revisiting the intimate origins of the piece by inviting guests to experience the work and the company's hospitality aesthetic ... exploring the place where our human capacity for creativity and regeneration meets old fashioned hospitality. To learn more about the salons and to be added to this or future salon, please contact deborah@scapegoatgarden.org.
Contact Improvisation Jam This is an opportunity for like-minded movers to come together to explore Contact and ensemble improvisation in a fun, supportive, sometimes instructive, disorienting and listening environment. Relationship in Contact can mirror relationship in life: build trust, take risks and push your own edges. The body demands honesty in this form. We usually begin with a facilitated warm-up and then follow the path of least resistance. The Jam is open to seasoned Contact dancers, improvisational movers and those interested in being open and curious. $10 per session The Garden Center (Parking is available behind and to the south side of Real Arts Ways. You MUST, however, access the elevator or stairs in the main lobby of 56 Arbor, on the street side of the building.)
