Scapegoat Garden

July 20, 2009

Dear Scapegoat Garden family and friends,

I am hopeful that you are finding opportunities to savor the summer sun. Scapegoat Garden is using these summer months to prepare for performances of our latest work, Prazer em conhecê-lo: Espaço Infinito (Pleased to meet you: Infinite Space) on September 4-5, 2009 at Charter Oak Cultural Center. I’ve often said that Scapegoat Garden’s mission of collaboration is fulfilled, in part, by the sustenance we receive from people outside the studio. We have never been more in need of your help as we work to create an event that embodies the integrity of our creative process and produces a meaningful experience for you, our audiences. A gift of any size will help us meet our goal.

Early last August, I traveled to Cape Verde to serve as an artist instructor for CulturArte (CREC’s international youth arts residency program), and to begin a collaborative process with my fellow artist instructor, Mano Preto (Artistic Director of the acclaimed Raiz di Polon). During the month of September, Mano and I generated movement material and developed a structure for the new work we had envisioned. As we parted company, we committed to continue our creative work long distance. Witnessing Cape Verde’s reverence for arts and culture deepened my conviction that the arts help us imagine ourselves as we were, as we are, as we might be, as we believe we should be, and as we hope to become.

Prazer em conhecê-lo: Espaço Infinito will serve as the culmination my collaboration with Mano Preto. Our plans to premiere the piece in Hartford this past February were thwarted as we struggled to obtain Mano’s travel visa. In recent weeks, however, we have received confirmation that Mano will, in fact, travel to Hartford this August. While the visa process proved far more costly than originally anticipated, we are both excited to complete the work we began a year ago, and to share the fruit of that labor with you.

Your financial support, at any level, will go a long way toward making Prazer em conhecê-lo: Espaço Infinito a reality. We are grateful for the funds we’ve already been granted from the Roberts Foundation, Greater Hartford Arts Council, Hartford Court of Common Council, and the initial funds from the Surdna Foundation which supported my work with Mano last year. Now as we round the last corner in this creative process, we ask that you join these generous donors by making a financial contribution of your own. We are eager to count you among our collaborators.

Summer typically encourages a garden’s vitality, and with it the promise of a plentiful fall harvest. With your help, this will be no less true for Scapegoat Garden this year.

Scapegoat Garden is a non-profit 501(c)3 arts organization. As a result your contribution is tax deductible. Many thanks in advance for your generous contribution.
