Scapegoat Garden

May 20, 2010

Dearest Scapegoat Garden friends,

We invite you to share in our joy as we prepare to give birth.

Scapegoat Garden’s last year can be described in terms anticipation, transformation, unfolding mystery, struggle, pain, relief, and joy. We have engaged in an international exchange, welcomed new dancers and board members, found a temporary home, and formed relationships with new funding sources. Births and losses, literally and figuratively, have been universal experiences shaping those who shape the company. Artists often relate the creative process to giving birth, and we all hope for births that are welcomed into a supportive community. Scapegoat Garden’s transition to the next artistic and structural tier could not be possible without your support to help us cross this important threshold.

An intimate, interactive exploration of the human capacity for creativity and regeneration, Scapegoat Garden will present (re)Birth at 8pm on July 7th, 8th & 9th at The Studio at Billings Forge in Hartford. This surreal baby shower anticipates new life, with all its joys and challenges. I’ve conceived qnd developed this new work in collaboration with Jennifer Cormier, Amy Nesbitt, and guest artists: Leslie Frye-Maietta (of Full Force Dance Theatre and DancEnlight), Jennifer Morley-Wrona (founding member of Scapegoat Garden), and Marisa Copley (video artist).

Weaving images of local women sharing their own birth stories, video projections will provide a layer of light, color, and texture to the movement, words, and songs produced live on stage.

In lieu of a “baby shower” gift, your financial support will go a long way toward making (re)Birth a reality. We are grateful for the funds we’ve already been granted specifically for this project from the Greater Hartford Arts Council’s Community Events Grant. While I am eager to put the funds I was recently awarded from the Hartford Arts and Heritage Jobs grant to good use for the 2011 season, Scapegoat Garden still requires essential funds to bring (re)Birth to life in the next several weeks. As we round the last corner in this creative process, we are eager to count you among our collaborators. A gift of any size will help us meet our goal.

Scapegoat Garden is a non-profit 501(c)3 arts organization. As a result your contribution is tax deductible. Many thanks in advance for your generous contribution.

We wish you an abundant spring and look forward to celebrating (re)Birth with you in July.
